Saturday's Party--Hot Chocolate On a Stick

HOT CHOCOLATE ON A STICK

Thanks to everyone for linking up to last's week's party!  And I'm sorry for being so late getting this one up.  I need to plan better, I know.

Here's a taste of what was shared:

Jen, from Iron Violet Designs linked up these adorable snowman candybars!  I love it!  I'm stealing it for K-Girl's 3rd brithday party next week.  (Watch for a guest post from Jen soon!)

We're getting close to football time, aren't we? Check out this Tex-Mex Chili Dip from Martha over at Seaside Simplicity!

And now, because I don't want to keep you waiting, and because it's snowing outside and I want hot chocolate now, I'm going to share with you this awesome Hot Chocolate On a Stick.

I don't think I can drink hot chocolate any other way now, after having this.

Surprisingly, it was rather easy too.  You could do it the hard way (melting the chocolate over a double boiler) but my microwave worked just fine.

HOT CHOCOLATE ON A STICK

  • 1/2 cup cocoa
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 3/4-1 cup HOT milk, or milk/cream combo per stick
Other supplies
  • ice cube tray to mold
  • craft sticks (can pick up at any craft store)
Yields about 2 dozen sticks

Break the 4 chocolate bars up into smaller pieces, and melt in increments of 30 seconds in the microwave.  Stir after every time!  When the chocolate is almost melted, but still has a few chunks you're done!  Stir it until all the chunks melt.  Add the cocoa and the powdered sugar and stir well.  It's going to be rather thick.  If it gets too thick to stir well, stick it back in the microwave for like 10 seconds, just to soften the chocolate up again.  If you have access to a disposible piping bag (like wilton's) it works great!  If not, you can place the chocolate in a HEAVY DUTY ziplock bag.  Cut the tip off, and pipe into your container of choice.  I used the ice cube trays, I've heard of people using muffin tins, or shot glasses.  The ice cube trays, when full, hold about 1oz of chocolate, give or take a tiny bit.  Smack the trays on the counter a few times to get the tops rather even.  Add your sticks, and then let them sit until firm.  Or put in the fridge for about 30 minutes.  When you're ready to serve them, pour your hot milk (about 3/4-1 cup) into your mug, add your stick and stir until the chocolate is completely melted.

Keep sticks in a closed container to store.  Not the fridge, because they'll soak of fridge odors and be gross. :)  They can be stored for a long time (like 6months or something). DON'T let water or other liquids touch the chocolate.  It will seize up and be ruined.

Variations:
-Use a straight candy-cane as the stick
-Try half white chocolate, half dark chocolate
-Dip the finished sticks in melting candies and roll in crushed candy canes, marshmallows, red hots, ect.
-To add flavoring (such as mint, vanilla) or coloring use a paste or a powder, since liquid will cause you problems.  You could just scrape a vanilla bean.

Giveaway + Saturday's Party

GIVEAWAY!

Happy New Year to you all!!  Want to hear how I spent my new year?  I listened to K-girl have melt-down after melt-down for an hour (this is was 7pm, no way was she staying up till midnight!) and then the power went out!  It was out for 3 hours.  During this time, Captain Jax went into town to get cell service (I know, we live in the middle of nowhere) and try to call someone to cover his shift at work that started at 11pm.

Meanwhile, I covered the kids with a million blankets, because the house was quickly cooling off with no power.  And then I read a book by candle light.  Yeah, not exactly how I planned to ring in the New Year!

I don't know how many of you actually visit my blog on a regular basis, or if you follow it through a reader (I do most of my blog following through google reader) but if you've seen my blog page, you'll notice I have a button at the top for Hamburger Helper, and a wonderful thing they've got going on right now.  To raise awareness about the national issue of hunger, Hamburger Helper is partnering with Tim McGraw to help Feeding America deliver millions of meals to local food banks through the Show Your Helping Hand campaign.

On certain boxes of Hamburger Helper, there is a code you can log on and put it.  For every code, Hamburger Helper donates 17cents to the Feeding America program.  I know, it doesn't sound like a lot, but 17cents provides one meal to a food bank!  Hamburger Helper (along with Chicken, and Tuna Helper) are something I keep on hand.  They're affordable, quick, and when food drives come along, I love being able to grab a box, and have almost a full meal to give to the food bank.

This giveaway prize pack includes a copy of Tim McGraw's "Southern Voice" CD, 1 foam hand, 1 box of Hamburger Helper, and a $10 donation made on your behalf to the Show Your Helping Hand campaign.

TO ENTER:
-Leave a comment.  That's all, I like to make this easy for you.  One comment per person please!
-Giveaway closed Jan 5th at midnight MST, and the winner will be notified.

(Prize Pack and information about Show Your Helping Hand Campaign was given to me by Hamburger Helper through My Blog Spark.)

Waffle Trifle, Saturday's Party AND a $50 Giveaway!

WAFFLE TRIFLE

Last night, our dinner was a flop.  K-girl ended up with chicken nuggets, and I was scrambling trying to find something decent for Captain Jax and I, that didn't involve too much effort.

Frozen waffles it was!  But I wanted to showcase these beautiful, handcrafted glasses I purchased through Novica.com.  So I played around and created this waffle trifle.  Quite easy, and would be a beautiful presentation for a breakfast party.

Aren't these glasses pretty?  I love them!  Because they're hand-crafted, they are all different.  Very subtle differences, like the thickness of the glasses, or the heights aren't exactly the same.  But that is what is so wonderful about them!  Our current glasses, that we got for our wedding 5 years ago, I see everywhere.  They are NOT unique!  I hate that, which is why I love these glasses.  My next door neighbor isn't going to have these glasses.

Novica has a wonderful selection of gifts for everyone!  And it helps support artisans across the world, who otherwise would only be local.  They have a corporate gift section, which is where I purchase these glasses from, and have wonderful items.

Do you want to win a $50 gift certificate to Novica?  Here's what you've got to do:

1-Go check out their gifts for mom, their gifts for that man in your life, their jewlery, such as bracelets and earrings, their corporate gift section, ANY of there wonderful sections (tableware and entertaining?  You can never have enough beautiful dishes!)

2-Leave a comment letting me know what you would purchase from there if you received this $50 gift certificate and WHY.  Is it because it's made it Thailand and you feel you have a special bond with Thai items after spending 2 weeks there?  Or because it would just plain look awesome in your home?  Or maybe you're like me, and you like being able to support artisans in their craft.  Let me know :)

(One comment per person please!  Contest closes MONDAY Dec 20th at midnight, winner has 24hrs to contact me to get their code for $50 before another one will be drawn.  This giveaway is sponsored by Novica, who provided me with a gift certificate, and one for my awesome readers.)

Pulled Pork Sandwiches and Saturday's Party

PULLED PORK SANDWICHES

I'm better this week, but still getting back into the groove of things.  It's always hard being sick on a holiday isn't it?  And kind of not fair either. So i wanted to make sure I had this post going early!!

My kitchen is also almost cleaned up from Thanksgiving, finally!

This recipe is perfect for those large crowds you might be expecting this holiday season.  You can cook it overnight, and have it ready to go!  It also freezes and reheats quite nicely, if you happen to have any leftovers.  We usually don't.  The nice thing about this recipe, is the option to flavor it with way you want.  You can use any type of barbecue sauce you want!  We made it last with a mango-chiplote sauce that Captain Jax just loves.  It was wonderful!

If you're feeling ambitious, you can lay slices of provolone cheese on top, and the broil the sandwiches to give them a nice crunch.  Either way, it's perfect with some cheese on top!

PULLED PORK SANDWICHES
Posted at: http://recipesofacheapskate.blogspot.com

  • boneless pork ribs-  estimate about 1/4lb per person
  • 1/2-1 bottle bbq sauce, depending on how saucy you like it (just the standard size bottles)
  • rolls/buns for serving
  • cheese for topping
Place the pork in the crockpot and cook for 8 hours on low heat. Shred the meat, add the sauce and cook for 2 more hours on low.  Serve over rolls with cheese.  You can add the cheese and broil for a crunchy sandwich.  Leftovers are freezable. Just divide into bags, label, and freeze!  Reheat in a pan on the stove, or even back in the crockpot.

Coconut Crusted Bananas--Saturday's Party 11-20-10

SATURDAY'S PARTY WITH COCONUT CRUSTED BANANAS

Thank you all for linking up last week!  Such great entries! Here's a taste of what was shared real quick, before I give you this perfect banana recipe.

Roasted Red Pepper Dip over at Cookin' With Cat.  What a perfect way to start your Thanksgiving off!  And keep everyone out of that turkey.

And how about these little turtle doves?  K-girl would get such a kick out of making these with me.  And they'd make a wonderful addition to any candy plates you're making for the holidays.  Check them out at Chestnut Tree Lane.

Easy To Be Gluten Free shared a wonderful recipe for flourless pumpkin rolls.  A perfect treat to lay out for a party buffet.

Now here's the Coconut Crusted Bananas.  These would be great for a nice intimate dinner with a few friends, since they do take a little time, and they're best eaten warm.

But boy, they are GOOD.

COCONUT CRUSTED BANANAS
Posted at: http://recipesofacheapskate.blogspot.com
  • 2-3 bananas
  • 1/2 cup flour
  • 1/2 cup water
  • a sprinkle or 2 cinnamon
  • coconut (about 1/2 a bag)
  • oil for frying--about 1/4 inch in the pan
Peel the bananas and slice into thirds.  Take each third and slice it in 1/2 length-wise.  While the oil is heating in the pan, mix together the water, flour, and cinnamon in a shallow dish.  Place the coconut in another dish.  When the oil is heated through, dredge the bananas in the flour mixture, then roll in the coconut.  Fry for a few minutes on each side, until the coconut is browned.  Serve warm with a brown sugar glaze (I made this by melting together some butter and brown sugar, and a splash of vanilla).

Taco Bites--Saturday's Party 11/12/10

TACO BITES

(psss--watch closely, I have a giveaway coming up this afternoon, with a short entry window!!)

Thanks everyone for linking up last week!  I love seeing all the different party ideas!  Here's a taste of what was shared. . .you can check out all the items shared, for every week,  HERE.

Cheese Truffles.  You know how I love my cheese.  This is the PERFECT party treat!  Instead of one big cheeseball everyone cuts into, everyone can have their own cheeseball.  It's on my list for our next party.  Check it out at Louanne's Kitchen

And as we're getting closer to having more and more parties, you can't have a party if bacon's not involved.  Ok, well you can.  But how can you not have little sandwiches?  Things in miniature are just fun. :)  And while you're checking these BLT Bites out at 3 Sides Of Crazy, check out all their dips too!  A perfect sunday night football party ready to go!

These jam bars remind me of being a kid.  I remember having these growing up.  I love them.  Go take a peek at Ceo A's Draicht

And now these Taco Bites.  I saw them over at Carrie's Cooking and Recipes and thought "Perfect!" and jumped right in to make them.

I used Frito Scoops as the little bowls.  They were small, but perfect for bite size.  But because they were small, it took a little while to get all the fillings inside (and STAYING inside).  I used the sour cream like glue, to keep the tomatoes in place.

K-girl ate them up.  She's one of those, who picks out the filling of everything, and leaves the sad broken shell on her plate.  Not this time.  Except for the tomatoes, which I can't convince her are so tasty!

And if you have one of these, it makes for a perfect serving platter.

TACO CUPS
Posted at: http://recipesofacheapskate.blogspot.com
Adapted from: Carrie's Cooking and Recipes
  • Ground meat seasoned with taco seasoning
  • shredded cheese
  • shredded lettuce
  • diced tomatoes
  • sour cream
  • Frito's Scoops
Place a little bit of meat into each frito.  You might have to go through the bag to find the ones that are shaped just right.  Layer your cheese, lettuce, sour cream, and tomatoes.  If things are falling off, the sour cream makes a nice 'glue'!

Spinach Cups--Saturday's Party

SPINACH CUPS

Welcome to the party this week!  Thanks to everyone for playing last week.  Here's a taste of what was shared.

Moms Crazy Cooking shared this recipe for Pumpkin Swirl Brownies.  I'm not a pumpkin person (which is why you haven't seen any pumpkin recipes on here during pumpkin season) but this looks amazing!!

What party is complete without a bowl of meatballs?  Always Eat On The Good China shared this great recipe for Sweet and Zesty Meatballs.  I don't have a go-to meatball recipe, but I think this might be it!

Candied Bacon Pepper Squash. . . .a perfect fall recipe, to wow your party guests!  Go check it out at Hun, What's For Dinner?

And here's what I've got for you (are you reading this wonton warrior? ;)  It's for you!)  Spinach, cream cheese, mozzarella, and artichokes.  Combine them together, place in your wonton cups, heat them up, and you have your spinach artichoke dip, without all the hassle of dipping!

SPINACH CUPS
  • 36 small wonton wrappers
  • 1 small can(8 1/2 oz)artichoke hearts, drained and chopped
  • 1/2 of a 10 oz package frozen chopped spinach, thawed and well drained
  • 1 cup shredded monterey jack cheese
  • 1/2 cup grated parmesan cheese
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
Preheat oven to 325 and spray mini muffin pan lightly with cooking spray. Press one wonton wrapper into each cup and spray again. Bake about 9 minutes or until lightly golden. Repeat with remaining wontons.
Combine remaining ingredients and mix well. Fill wonton cups with mixture and place on a baking sheet. Bake about 7 minutes or until warmed through. Enjoy.

Bruschetta Bread--Saturday's Party 10-29-10

BRUSCHETTA BREAD

Thanks to everyone who linked up to Saturday's Party last week!  Please keep spreading the word, so we can watch this party GROW!!

Here's a taste of what was shared.

Double-Cheese and Prosciutto Calzone, over at Hun. . .What's for Dinner?  It looks so tasty and cheesy!

My Sweet And Savory shared this recipe for Carrot Zucchini bread.  I can't wait to try it, because K-girl won't touch carrots (or zucchini actually. . . .) and this hides them really nicely!

And this one. . .an italian feast from Food: Cooking and Capturing.  Don't those peaches look tasty?

Want to know what Saturday's Party is all about?  Check out this link.

This recipe I'm going to share with you today is so quick and easy, and delicious.  I couldn't believe how fast it came together, and how great it was.  With the different flavors of italian bread, there's a lot of flavor options you can try.

BRUSCHETTA BREAD
Posted at: http://recipesofacheapskate.blogspot.com
  • 1 loaf of Italian bread, sliced 1/2 inch thick
  • olive oil
  • garlic salt
  • italian seasonings
  • sliced tomatoes (2-4 per loaf of bread)
  • shredded Italian cheese blend
Preheat your oven's broiler to high.  Arrange the slices of bread on a baking sheet.  Drizzle the slices with olive oil, and the sprinkle with garlic salt and italian seasonings.   Lay the tomato slices on the bread slices and cover with cheese.  Use as much as you like! Broil for about 5 minutes, or until the cheese is melted.

Wedding Brownie--Saturday's Party Week 5

WEDDING BROWNIE

Welcome to Saturday's Party!!  This is the ultimate party food, right?  For my sister's wedding, they wanted a brownie wedding cake.  Neither of them really cares for cake, but they both love brownies.  I said "ok, I'll see what I can do".

I used your basic box brownies, following the directions to make them more "cake-like" by adding an extra egg.  My concern was that brownies are soft and gooey.  Soft and gooey things don't like to be played with--aka: lifted and stacked on top of each other.

It worked perfectly.  They still had enough brownie texture to them, and tasted perfect!  And it was easier for me to work with them.

The filling was what I like to call "raspberry crumbles".  It's the exact same filling I had for my wedding cake, and we loved it.  That's the recipe I'm going to share with you today.  It's so tasty!  and you could easily substitute another flavor.

RASPBERRY CRUMBLES
Posted at: http://recipesofacheapskate.blogspot.com
  • 1-2 bags frozen raspberries
  • 1 package danish dessert
Mix up the danish dessert according to the directions on the package.  while your raspberries are still frozen, crush them up and mix them into the danish dessert.  Add enough that you have a jam-like texture.  Not too runny, but not too thick.  Use as a filling for cakes, topping for ice cream, etc.  Refrigerate any unused filling, as well as the cake.

Now link up your party ideas!  Here's a taste of what was shared last week, to get you going. :)

Brenda's Canadian Kitchen linked up this recipe for Turtle Cheesecake Tarlets.  Yum!

Now let's get Saturday's Party started!  Come play and spread the word!  The more the merrier! :)

    Saturday's Party-10-16-10

     SATURDAY'S PARTY
(still time to enter the giveaway for chocolate!  See post HERE Giveaway is now closed)

Wow, I'm late.  But I've had this going on. My sister got MARRIED TODAY!!  so I was WAY busy.  And out of town.  In the mountains.  Freezing cold.  With no internet OR phone service.

But it was a beautiful wedding, and as stressful as it was getting all our crap in and out of places, it was wonderful spending time with my family.

Here's a taste of what was shared last week.

Chaya, over at My Sweet And Savory, shared this recipe for Dulce de Leche cookies.  Oh my goodness, they look so great!

Thanks to everyone for linking up and helping spread the word about Saturday's Party over here!

Here's what I have to bring to the party today. Fruit dip.  We made this for my sister's wedding this weekend, and I just ate it with a spoon.  It's amazingly tasty.  And I probably gained 10 pounds too.  But it was totally worth it.

    FRUIT DIP
    Posted at: http://recipesofacheapskate.blogspot.com
    • 1 8oz pkg cream cheese
    • 1/2 cup brown sugar
    • 1 tsp vanilla
    • 1/4 cup heath toffee bits, or a crushed Skor candy bar
Mix together, chill, and serve with a variety of fruit.  Apples and grapes are great.  Oranges probably wouldn't be so great.

    Saturday's Party--Dessert Cups

    SATURDAY'S PARTY--DESSERT CUPS

Thanks to all who partied last week!

Now I've got a sweet treat for you today.  Dessert cups.  Such a quick and simple treat, yet sure to wow guests.
I made these with a whipped cream inside.  Next time I'm going to try a custard/pudding type of filling.  You can use whatever kind of fruit you love to top.  My sister was in charge of decorating, therefore every cup got 1 of everything.  She's thorough, if nothing else. :)

Give these a try at your next party!

    DESSERT CUPS
    Posted at: http://recipesofacheapskate.blogspot.com
    • 1 pkg wonton wrappers
    • heaving whipping cream
    • powdered sugar
    • assorted fruit for topping
Grease a muffin tin, and push a wrapper into each cup.  Grease each cup a tiny bit (like with a spray of Pam, or I used olive oil and a brush).  Bake at 350deg for about 5 minutes, or until the wrappers are starting to brown.  Whip the heaving whipping cream, and add some sugar.  Spoon the cream into the shells and top with fruit.

Now, link up your party ideas and foods!
